Detroit riots drive doctor's novel

Author Patricia Gussin says her first novel, "Shadow of Death," draws on experiences she had during a time when she was one of the first wave of women to attend medical school at Wayne State University in the 1960s while also juggling family responsibilities. The story is set in Detroit just after the 1967 riots. The book reflects on some of her experiences in medical school and what life in Detroit was like in the late 1960s.
